I tend to be very verbal about my Christian beliefs…always have been, even back to my high school days. I’ve decided and understand that I don’t fit in this world anymore. I’m out of step with the values of today’s society. To put it bluntly, I march to a different drummer and at 73 years old…I don’t intend to change. I know and believe that my Lord took on a body of humanity (yet he was still God) and died a shameful death for the sins of this world…and those sins are plainly laid out in scripture, both in the Old and New Testaments. Pastors, theologians, and Christians should never compromise the commands of God just to satisfy the world. I cannot and will not accept anything that today’s society declares “not sin,” when the Bible plainly declares it wrong. I don’t believe in a watered-down gospel. A person that’s not been regenerated by Christ cannot understand this, because the Holy Spirit is not present in their hearts and lives. A person who has never known the forgiveness of sins by God just simply can’t understand the things of God. It’s stupidity to them. We as believers understand that the preaching of the gospel is foolishness to the world, and we can’t ignore the words of Christ when he went back to heaven, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” Matt 28:19-20.
God destroyed an entire city for its sins in the Old Testament, and He can certainly do that today. Americans act like a little child that doesn’t believe fire will burn. I’m reminded of a statement by Ruth Graham, “If God doesn’t punish America, He’ll have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah.” And we all know that will never happen. These words were uttered as she was reading a draft of a book written by her husband, Reverend Billy Graham. I believe that God’s heart is grieving over the state of this world today, but that condition is nothing more than the result of sin and compromise…plain and simple.
We are losing young people by the droves in our churches today…Why? The world offers them more of what they want to hear than the church does. Our young people have developed the mindset of…if it feels good, do it. They don’t want to listen to a Bible believing pastor proclaim the truth. I think Hebrews 4:12 explains it well, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” We all know a sword hurts when it pierces our bodies, and today’s world doesn’t want to hurt or feel uncomfortable. The pure gospel is not a feel good gospel…it’s a life of surrender and sacrifice. Young parents and children want music in worship services that causes their hips to move and gyrate; whereas the old traditional hymns of the church cause the heart to tremble…why? They are anointed by God. Just go back and read some of the stories behind those great hymns…like Just As I Am and It is Well With my Soul. Now I’m not saying contemporary songs are not good and profitable for the work of God, but they are never to replace those old hymns that have drawn many people to Jesus over the centuries. How can the Spirit of Christ touch a heart when a song is so suggestive of the world’s values?
For the life of me, I will never understand young parents today. Most people with any common sense will acknowledge there is a God, but they constantly allow anything to pull them and their children away for the church and the doctrines of Christ. They simply don’t believe in Him as Lord and Savior. They seem not to be concerned that their children’s eternal destinies rest in their hands. They take those little ones to places they have no business being and teach them, by their actions, that it’s okay to partake in the sinful things of the world. Those precious little ones will spend eternity separated from God if they are not hearing the gospel preached and if they don’t accept Christ as Lord and Savior. Oh, those mommas and daddies will bring them to church on special occasions, but they witness how their parents live such ungodly lives before them on a daily basis. They watch them pick up a glass of wine or beer instead of picking up God’s word and reading them a Bible story. Children aren’t stupid…they can see through the hypocrisy.
“How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?”
I don’t feel at home in this world anymore!
